New Zealand have been a historically good One Day unit. However, recent form has not been so good. Winning the first match of their series against Pakistan earlier this month was an enormous relief, breaking an embarrassing 11-match losing streak from their last win in August 2010. What was embarrassing about the dismal run was that four of the matches were against Bangladesh in Bangladesh, five were against India in India and the last two were in Sri Lanka. This does not bode well for their chances on the subcontinent pitches, as they have obvious deficiencies in all facets of the game, with the exception being fielding.Batting is a serious issue for New Zealand. It can be very good and they generally chase well. However, New Zealand rely too much on Brendan McCullum, Jacob Oram, Jesse Ryder and lynchpin Ross Taylor to score all their runs. Without those batsmen firing, it is generally left to Vettori to be a one-man band. While it has not affected his performances too much, it is almost impossible to win the World Cup on the back of just one player, especially when, apart from Tim Southee and Vettori, there aren’t many bowlers in the team that are consistently firing with the ball.

Verdict: Current form would see them struggling to make the semis. Should be good enough to get through the group stages, but will find it hard to go any further.
