Zimbabwe are the minnows of all the ICC members. They have had a better record as of late with improved batting stocks, as they showed by being somewhat more competitive during the South Africa series in October. However, it cannot be ignored that they are in a rebuilding phase, as they have been since the retirement of Heath Streak and the huge exodus of players that included England coach Andy Flower, Grant Flower and Sean Ervine, who has just pulled out of the World Cup in order to play for Hampshire in the English County Competition. Since the last World Cup, only five players have been retained which means they are going to be a young team, which adds to their unpredictability. However, their bowling is a massive problem. With a lack of decent pace bowlers, they will have to rely on spinners. It might pay off on the subcontinent's turning wickets, but will be difficult against the stronger teams with better players of spin. A lot of pressure will be on experienced left-arm orthodox bowler Ray Price’s shoulders as he will have to bowl consistently economically for Zimbabwe to be competitive against the best in the world.

Verdict: They have done well in hiring Brian Lara as their batting coach. It will help their batting but their bowling is a big issue. Need to make it through to the Super 8’s stage to be taken seriously in world cricket.
